Message of the Day

The Present is the point at which Time touches Eternity. Of the present moment, and of it only, humans have an experience analogous to the experience which [God] has of reality as a whole; in it alone, freedom and actuality are offered them. He would therefore have them continually concerned either with Eternity (which means being concerned with Him) or with the Present—either meditating on their eternal union with, or separation from, Himself; or else obeying the present voice of conscience, bearing the present cross, receiving the present grace, giving thanks for the present pleasure.
  - C. S. Lewis (1898-1963), "The Screwtape Letters"

(Be here now in love this day.)

JAS 3:13-18;    PS 19:8, 9, 10, 15;    MK 9:14-29

R. The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart.

The law of the LORD is perfect,
refreshing the soul;
The decree of the LORD is trustworthy,
giving wisdom to the simple.

The precepts of the LORD are right,
rejoicing the heart;
The command of the LORD is clear,
enlightening the eye.

The fear of the LORD is pure,
enduring forever;
The ordinances of the LORD are true,
all of them just.

Let the words of my mouth and the thought of my heart
find favor before you,
O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.

Reflection on the Scriptures

- http://www.preacherexchange.com/daily_bread.htm

I asked your disciples to drive it out, but they were unable to do so.

The disciples’ failure to drive out demons initially casts a negative light on Jesus. It appears as if he hasn’t properly prepared them to continue his healing ministry, or worse, that the claims of his miraculous power are exaggerated. While Jesus finds fault in the disciples’ lack of faith and prayer, we also note their lack of faith in themselves. The disciples lack trust in God’s power to work through them. They cannot fathom that they have the ability to perform miracles. The Lord calls us to trust that in his name, we can work wonders.

To see ourselves as God sees us, we pray.

Spiritual Reading

The Book of Supreme Truth, by St. John Rusybroeck (1293-1381)

Behold, I have said this: that the contemplative lover of God is united with God through means, and also without means, and thirdly, without difference or distinction; and this I find in nature, and in grace, and also in glory. Further I have said that never creature may be or become so holy that it loses its created being and becomes God; even the soul of our Lord Jesus Christ shall ever remain creature, and other than God. Yet, none the less, we must all be lifted up above ourselves into God, and become one spirit with God in love; and then we shall be blessed. And therefore mark my words and my meaning, and understand me aright as to what is the condition and the way to our eternal blessedness.

- Chapter 2: A short repetition of all the highest teachings written by the author.
