Book/Resource of the Week
Words Around the Table, by Gail Ramshaw. Liturgy Training Publications, 1991.
This book aims to magnify “the mystery of the Meal”. It explains what Christians do when they gather on Sundays. It tells what the words and the deeds mean and where the meanings come from. Basically both the words and the meanings can be traced back to the early centuries when the church, apologists, theologians, and bishops wrote and preached the meaning of the Eucharistic liturgy. After the Last Supper, the apostles scattered and each devised the manner of celebrating Eucharist. These ways of celebrating the Eucharist were codified, and eventually the church adopted one way. Then the learned in the church began their descriptions of the words and actions used in the Mass.
But what does this mean? Why do we do that in the Mass? The first chapter dwells on the meaning of Sunday worship. Why do folks jump out of bed early on Sunday and prepare for a time of common worship in their family parish? The author goes back in history and tells the reader what some wise persons wrote about Sunday worship as far back as 150 C.E. “Christ rose from the dead on Sunday. The disciples were on their way to Emmaus on a Sunday when they met Christ. On the first day of the week Jesus appeared to the disciples behind locked doors. Eight days later He confronted Thomas. God began creation on a Sunday. On the 50th day after Easter, the Holy Spirit came .”
The second chapter explains why the liturgy begins with the sign of the cross. This church’s way of beginning the liturgy comes to readers from Mary, John, Paul, Constantine, and all those who in spirit stand at the foot of the cross. Chapter three explains why Jesus is called Christ as His name is used in the Kyrie and Christe eleison. The idea of a “glorious liturgy” is offered in Chapter four through the Glory to God in the highest, and takes the readers back to the night of Jesus’ birth. Chapters four and five turn to the Word as used in the Mass, the Word from Scripture for inspiration and imitation.
Further chapters deal with the Communion of Saints, Prayer, offering, giving thanks, God of power and might, sanctify, Body and Blood of Christ, Father, peace, mercy, and finally the word Amen, a word to claim all the words needed to begin a new week.

St. Gertrude (1256 - 1302): November 6
Gertrude, a Benedictine nun in Helfta (Saxony), was one of the great mystics of the 13th century. Together with her friend and teacher St. Mechtild, she practiced a spirituality called "nuptial mysticism," that is, she came to see herself as the bride of Christ. Her spiritual life was a deeply personal union with Jesus and his Sacred Heart, leading her into the very life of the Trinity.
But this was no individualistic piety. Gertrude lived the rhythm of the liturgy, where she found Christ. In the liturgy and in Scripture, she found the themes and images to enrich and express her piety. There was no clash between her personal prayer life and the liturgy.

Religious Naturalism
Religious Naturalism is the philosophical/religious system where a person obtains his or her religious beliefs that are derived by reason and science. Religious naturalists denounce racism and sexism, affirm the need to care for our ecosystem, and assert that we must respect different religious viewpoints.
Religious naturalists can be atheists, theists, agnostics, Buddhists, etc. Some work against particular theological viewpoints about God, while others may not. Generally, they affirm biological evolution as the source of our existence.

Beware of Dog!!
Upon entering the little country store, the stranger noticed a sign saying "DANGER! BEWARE OF DOG!" posted on the glass door. Inside he noticed a harmless old hound dog asleep on the floor besides the cash register.
He asked the store manager, "Is THAT the dog folks are supposed to beware of?"
"Yep, that's him," he replied.
The stranger couldn't help but be amused. "That certainly doesn't look like a dangerous dog to me. Why in the world would you post that sign?"
"Because," the owner replied, "before I posted that sign, people kept tripping over him."
