Message of the Day
“Silence guards the inner heat of religious emotions. This inner heat is the life of the Holy Spirit within us. Thus, silence is the discipline by which the inner fire of God is tended and kept alive.”
- Henri Nouwen [20th C.], “The Way of the Heart”
(Take time for silence this day. Pause a short while between activities. Tend the inner fire of the Spirit.)

1 SM 15:16-23; PS 50:8-9, 16BC-17, 21, 23; MK 2:18-22
R. To the upright I will show the saving power of God.
“Not for your sacrifices do I rebuke you,
for your burnt offerings are before me always.
I take from your house no bullock,
no goats out of your fold.”
“Why do you recite my statutes,
and profess my covenant with your mouth,
Though you hate discipline
and cast my words behind you?”
“When you do these things, shall I be deaf to it?
Or do you think that I am like yourself?
I will correct you by drawing them up before your eyes.
He that offers praise as a sacrifice glorifies me;
and to him that goes the right way I will show the salvation of God.”
Reflection on the Scriptures

Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?
The earthly ministry of Jesus was a time for people to cherish: The person and mission of Jesus were at hand. It was futile to live in anticipation of the new covenant, since here and now the promise was already fulfilled. Jesus gave the examples of sewing new cloth onto an old cloak, or pouring new wine into old wineskins. Such absurd practices would result in the destruction of both the old and the new. We, too, celebrate the messianic fulfillment. We live not in anticipation, but in celebration of what has been revealed. Our lives must express our belief that Jesus’ mission is with us and is part of our daily actions.
In gratitude for the gift of our faith, we pray.

Spiritual Reading
The Sparkling Stone, by St. John Rusybroeck (1293-1381)
The second thing is an inward silence; that is, that a man should be empty and free from images of all things which he ever saw or of which he ever heard.
The third thing is a loving adherence to God, and this adherence is itself fruition; for whosoever cleaves to God out of pure love, and not for his own profit, he enjoys God in truth, and feels that he loves God and that God loves him.
- Chapter 13. How we ought to have fruition of God.
