Message of the Day

In the midst of our dark and foggy times, all sorts of voices are shouting orders into the night, telling us what to do, how to adjust our lives. Out of the darkness, one voice signals something quite opposite to the rest - something almost absurd. But the voice happens to be the Light of the World, and we ignore it at our peril.
- Paul Aiello, Jr.

(What guidance from this Light have you been receiving lately?)

1 JN 3:22-4:6;    PS 2:7BC-8, 10-12;    MT 4:12-17, 23-25

R. I will give you all the nations for an inheritance.

The LORD said to me, “You are my Son;
this day I have begotten you.
Ask of me and I will give you
the nations for an inheritance
and the ends of the earth for your possession.”

And now, O kings, give heed;
take warning, you rulers of the earth.
Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice before him;
with trembling rejoice.

Reflection on the Scriptures

- http://www.preacherexchange.com/daily_bread.htm

He went around all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the Gospel of the Kingdom.

Matthew’s Gospel never slows down. In the first four chapters, Jesus is born and the magi come to visit. He grows to adulthood. He is baptized. He moves to Capernaum and begins his ministry. He preaches, “Repent, for the kingdom of God has come near.” He heals people with all kinds of diseases and disabilities. Crowds begin to gather around him. The epileptics, the paralytics, the blind, the lepers -- they all come to see and follow this Jesus who offers them healing and grace. And so we observe this week after Epiphany, when we are invited to search for signs and appearances of God in our midst.

God of Light, open our eyes to recognize your presence in our lives and in our world.

Spiritual Reading

The Sparkling Stone, by St. John Rusybroeck (1293-1381)

And so soon as we are uplifted through the Son into our Origin, we hear the voice of the Father, which draws us inward, and enlightens us with eternal truth. And truth shows to us the wide-opened good-pleasure of God, in which all good-pleasure begins and ends. There all our powers fail us, and we fall from ourselves into our wide-opened contemplation, and become all One and one All, in the loving embrace of the Threefold Unity. Whenever we feel this union, we are one being and one life and one blessedness with God. And there all things are fulfilled and all things are made new; for when we are baptized into the wide embrace of the Love of God, the joy of each one of us becomes so great and so special that he can neither think of nor care for the joy of anyone else; for then each one is himself a Fruition of Love, and he cannot and dare not seek for anything beyond his own.
